An investigation, of sorts
Who is Madame V—?
The author of The Gilded Mirror has never been photographed, interviewed, or correctly identified. This page collects everything the town believes it knows — which is to say, nothing at all.
The Evidence
Exhibits I–IV
I
The handwriting
Her dispatches arrive by post, in violet ink, on paper heavier than most wedding invitations. Our typesetter swears the hand is a woman's. Our typesetter has been wrong before.
II
The carriage
She was seen stepping from a black carriage on a gaslit street, veil drawn, at precisely 11:47 in the evening. Or so she says. The driver has never been found.
III
The waiting rooms
She knows which clinics keep you waiting forty minutes and which offer tea. She has never once been seen in a waiting room. Draw your own conclusions.
IV
The denials
Three celebrated surgeons, two editors of rival magazines, and one very famous aesthetician have each publicly denied being Madame V—. We note that no one asked them.
Her only statements to the press
“I can neither confirm nor deny that I am everywhere.”
“You have met me. You simply didn't notice.”
“A lady never reveals her sources — nor her face.”
Know something the town doesn't?
Every theory, sighting, and scandalous detail may be left at her door — anonymously, of course. She reads them all.
